Fast Company recently compiled its list of 12 top business books spanning topics from productivity, leadership and social media by writers like executive Robert Pozen and statistics guru Nate Silver. And Inc.com put together a list of 2012’s best books for entrepreneurs. They’re not all strictly business books, but they were chosen because they can help stimulate ideas for age-old and emerging challenges in business.
One book that made both lists, and one I’d recommend, is “Quiet: The Power of Introverts
in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” by Susan Cain. Cain – a former lawyer and, yes, an introvert – weaves together vivid anecdotes and recent research in fields like psychology and neuroscience. I’m an introvert and picked up the book because I’d been in a state of culture shock after going from the relatively solitary work of journalism writing and editing to working in a corporate environment full of meetings, presentations and networking events. Anyone who manages people will appreciate the book’s insights into how to get the best work out of his or her employees and manage teams made up of different personality types.
