A few weeks ago, I took my flu-ridden son to the clinic. I noticed that our family doctor had replaced his ultrathin notebook with a shiny new tablet. He’s not alone. Gartner predicted worldwide media tablet sales would reach 118.9 million units in 2012, a whopping 98 percent increase from 2011 sales. The net result? No longer just a consumer product, healthcare tablet PCs are gaining traction for practitioners large or small.
Tablets are Ideal for Healthcare
Portability, easy integration and functionality make tablets an ideal fit for clinics and hospitals, especially for clinicians who are rarely at a desk. With that in mind, total cost of ownership is a top concern for technology decision makers. Connecting, managing and securing a tablet costs 4.5 times its purchase price — an investment worth making. Fifty-one percent of healthcare organizations surveyed are currently using tablets, while another thirty-five percent are considering adoption. And 66 percent of practitioners use those tablets to access and manage patient data — just like the doctor who treated my son.
