Full-time students at SUNY Orange were at a tipping point. Many already struggled to balance full-time jobs and family commitments with school work. The lack of computing resource threatened to push those students over the edge.
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) alone didn’t provide the compute resource students needed for math and engineering applications, such as AutoCAD, Electrostatics 3D and Microsoft Visual Studio. They needed a technology that could boost power, spread resource further and make it more reliable. With Dell Wyse cloud technology, the scramble for computer lab time is a thing of the past.
And Dell Wyse PCs are easier to manage and secure. “It takes the same amount of time to manage 20 Dell Wyse cloud PCs as it does to manage one traditional PC,” according to Kenneth Kempsey, director of user support and operations at SUNY Orange. Savings to the college were immediate.
The new units cut traditional PC costs in half, extend lifecycles, leave smaller energy footprints and simplify maintenance cycles (Dell Wyse cloud clients don’t break or develop software problems). Computing resources are available to more students for less cost, and students can take advantage of interactive access in 22 classrooms, the college library and at student kiosks. Always-available, reliable computer-access helps students juggle school with work and family.
